Democritus Vs. Aristotle

Democritus

Democritus was a Greek philosopher who started research on atoms and matter 2400 years ago. His theory was matter could not be divided forever eventually you would be at the smallest piece possible. And his theory was ignored for 2000 years because of Aristotle's theory.

This is what they thought the atom looked like

Aristotle

Aristotle believed in the four elements. Earth, water, fire, and air and he  showed this by burning a log. The log is earth the fire is fire and the smoke is air and he put the fire out with water. And the people back then believed him because  it was easier to understand and they could see it with there own eyes.

Atoms!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Atoms are basically matter which makes up everyday objects. A desk, the air, even we are made up of atoms but the atoms are so small we cant see them. An atoms nucleus is made up of protons and neutrons and there is one neutron for every proton. There isnt always a proton for each neutron  so the the atam becomes either more positive or negetive. There are also electrons that cant get in the nucleus because the protons and neutrons wont let them in. But the electrons stay outside the nucleus running around. Electrons can also be traded or kidnapped.

An atom bomb works by causing a nuclear chain reaction which releases a huge amount of energy. An atom bomb is millions or billions of times more powerful than TNT. The first atomic explosion was on 16 July 1945 at the Alamogordo Test Range in New Mexico.

An Atom bomb works B splitting atoms like in these bombs threy used uranium and plutoniumDuring WWII the US started using the atomic bomb. On August 6, 1945, less than a month after its first testing, an atomic bomb named Little Boy was dropped on Hiroshima,Japan. "Little Boy" killed as many as 100,000 people that day.

Little Boy

After Hiroshima  a second bomb called Fat Man was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan three days later on August 9th it killed about 40,000 more people. Because of the atom bomb Japan surrendered to the U.S. on August 14th. Those were the only times since that any nuclear weapons had been used in a conflict between nations.

WOODWARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So during the summer I went to a summer camp named Woodward at Copper wich is in Copper,Co its near Vail if you know where that is.
I went there for two week's the first week I was snowboarding and the second week i was skateboarding. So when i got there had a 4 hour fligh and a 2 hour drive but once i was there i checked in an they gave me my room key my id and my elevator key. Then I put my stuff in my room and the skateboarded to the cage wich is there super cool store that has a mini bowl, MAC'S,gutiar hero, and a super big bean bag chair.

We hung out there for about an hour the we went to one of the best places on earth THE BARN which is a really big barn with flybed trampolines that make you jump so high a tumble track, spring floor, three foam pits,a giant bowl a mini ramp,a micro mini ramp, snowboard/ski rails and boxes, a snowboard and skateboard cliff drop into a foam pit,and a huge jump. Yea its a mouthful but you never get bored.

Now on to snowboarding on real snow so u take this bus from The Edge (the place were you sleep) to the top of the mountain were there are three different sections one with a big jump some rails and boxes. The other on has some smaller rails and boxes and some smaller jumps. The third has an air bag which is so much fun.
Then in the second week i was skateboarding so everyday we would get in the van and go to a bunch of different skateparks and skated all day. BYE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rabies!!!!!!!

OUCH  I just got bit by a squirrel I hope i don't have rabies. O right some of you might not know what rabies is. Rabies is a deadly virus that is mainly spread by infected animals. Rabies is spread by infected saliva entering through a bite or broken skin. The virus travels from the bite to the brain where it causes swelling.

Some of the symptoms are:

  • Anxiety, stress, and tension
  • Drooling
  • Convulsions
  • Exaggerated sensation at the bite site
  • Excitability
  • Loss of feeling in an area of the body
  • Loss of muscle function
  • Low-grade fever (102 degrees F or lower)
  • Muscle spasms
  • Numbness and tingling
  • Pain at the site of the bite
  • Restlessness
  • Swallowing difficulty (drinking causes spasms of the voicebox)

If you get infected with rabies and dont get treated it can lead to a coma or death. But if you get the rabies vaccine in rare cases some people can have an allergic reaction. More than 50,000 people die in the U.S. from rabies each year and the majority of them are kids.

CHICKEN POX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh chicken pocks. Hope I don't get them luckily I haven't yet. But about four million unlucky kids get chicken pocks. And chicken pocks is caused by varicilla-zostra virus. And if you don't know what chicken pox are then they are 250-500 fluid filled blisters.

But if you get a vaccination u cant get it. Or if u have had chicken pocks before your immune system will recognize the disease and kill it. But you can still get it when you are older but it could be worse like if u get shingles. Which is a painful blistering skin rash due to varicilla-zostra virus.

Symptom's

Most kids with chick pox's have symptom's like a fever, headache, tummy ache, or loss of appetite for a day or two before getting the pox's and last for 2-4 days. And kids with eczema can get more than 1,500 pox's.

If you have chicken pox's the itch like crazy but you cant itch them because the can break and leave a scar of get infected. But you can put cremes and bath in oatmeal to help the itching.

Defenitions

Virus- an ultramicroscopic (20 to 300 nm in diameter), infectious agent that replicates only within the cells of living hosts, mainly bacteria, plants, and animals: composed of an RNA or dna core, a protein coat, and, in more complex types, a surrounding envelope.

Vaccine- any preparation used as a preventive inoculation to confer immunity against a specific disease, usually employing an innocuous form of the disease agent, as killed or weakened bacteria or viruses, to stimulate antibody production.

Blisters- a thin vesicle on the skin, containing watery matter or serum, as from a burn or other injury.

Contaigious-

capable of being transmitted by bodily contact with an infected person or object: contagious diseases.

Incubation Period- the period between infection and the appearance of signs of a disease.

Symptoms- a sign or indication of something.

Immunity- the state of being immune from or insusceptible to a particular disease

Viruses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey today we will be talking about Viruses. And no not computer viruses the other kind of viruses that makes you sick. You can get a virus if somebody that is sick sneezes and you breath it in. Usually the mucus(AKA boogers) and hairs in your nose. But if it gets past that then it goes down and the viruses have these things on the side of them called keys and one of them unlockes a cell. And lets it in and it injects DNA(deoxyribonucleic acid) or RNA(ribonucleic acid). Then it uses the cell like a copying machine and the cell starts making more viruses then there are to many baby viruses in the cell and the cell explodes. Then the baby viruses look for other cells and the cycle starts over again.

Science Fair!!!!!!!!!

This year for the science fair I made a Gauss rifle and saw if the different sizes of magnets would make the ball bearing go farther. Some people have asked me how I came up with this. Well one day i was on YouTube and i was watching this guy that makes alot of kool stuff and a Gauss rifle was one of the videos and I thought how can I make this a science experiment.

Then i had to find all of my supplies so I went to google and typed in neodymium magnets and I found this place and ordered a couple different sizes of magnets. Oh and by the way they where NdFeB grade N42 neodymium magnets. Warning neodymium magnets are super super super strong. Trust me they snapped closed on me and my dads fingers it made my dad bleed and gave me a blood blister.

So now to the next step i had to find ball bearings. I searched all over the web to find some it was impossible but then i finally found some and ordered them.

These be the ball bearings

Now i had to find a railing to put all this stuff on. It was so hard to find this too. At first I was going to use pvc piping and cut it to make a rail but we couldn't do that. So then i had to find something else to use as my rail. Then I was wondering around Home Depot trying to find railing. And I finally found this steel railing and i was  perfect so I got it.(Since it was steel it was very dirty)

Look at that dirty thang

Then i had to figure out how to keep the railing straight up. I tried alot of stuff like a plastic bag block of wood then finally came up with something pencils so I stuck some on each side and i stood up.

These the pencils

Then I did a test run and the ball bearing kept going to the side. So I put some pipes on each side to keep the ball going straight.

These the pipes
Then finally for the first official test. I shot the ball with the small magnets and measured how far the ball went. Then I did it three times with each different size magnets.

Then I had to gather all my information and put it on my poster board.

Then it was judging day and I was SOOOOOOOOO NERVOUS.
So there was a couple of people in front of me to present. So they went and then it was my turn. So I explained my project then fired it to show how it works then showed them a video I made. Then the said some comments and then it was over. After it i wasn't nervous anymore it was actually fun.

Then a couple days later we had the ceremony. From lunch to the time the ceremony started I was working getting cables hooking stuff up to my laptop and testing stuff. I felt liked I worked there.
Well then the ceremony started and they announced the 1st,2nd,3rd, and honorable mention. So they announced the winners for the different categories and places. Then they finally got to the physical group. And i got FIRST place.
